US stocks close mixed; Dow, Nasdaq fall

US stocks closed mixed Tuesday as the Dow and the Nasdaq posted losses.

The blue-chip Dow was down 10 points, or 0.03%, to 33,976 at the final bell. The teach-heavy Nasdaq, meanwhile, shed four points, or 0.04%, to 12,153.

The S&P 500, on the other hand, rose three points, or 0.09%, to finish the session at 4,154.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, fell 0.5% to 16.86. Meanwhile, the 10-year US Treasury yield fell 0.4% to 3.576%.

The dollar index lost 0.35% to 101.75, while the euro rose 0.4% to $1.0972 against the greenback.

Precious metals were in positive territory with the price of gold adding 0.5% to $2,004 per ounce and silver up 0.6% to $25.20.

Oil prices were flat with global benchmark Brent crude at $84.73 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude sitting at $80.88.
