Egypt working with Sudanese authorities to evacuate its nationals

Egypt on Friday said that it is in contact with Sudanese authorities to secure the return of its nationals stuck in neighboring Sudan amid continued fighting.

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that its diplomatic mission in Wadi Halfa, northern Sudan is following the conditions of Egyptian nationals in Sudan and working to facilitate their return via land crossings between the two countries. Egypt lies just north of Sudan.

On April 18, Egyptian flag carrier Egypt Air announced the suspension of its flights to and from Sudan’s capital Khartoum amid the unstable security situation there.

International and regional efforts have so far failed to bring an end to the fighting between the Sudanese rivals.

On April 15, fighting erupted between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and has so far left more than 400 people dead so far in Khartoum and other cities.

Sudan has been without a functioning government since October 2021, when the military dismissed Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok’s transitional government and declared a state of emergency in what political forces called a “coup.”
