Bulgaria suspends education for 2nd straight day because of bomb scares

Bulgaria suspended and evacuated dozens of schools Tuesday after a second straight day of bomb scares.

Most schools in the nation’s capital of Sofia and the port cities of Varna and Burgas received threats by email and phone.

Initial reports said no bombs or explosive devices have been found.

Bulgaria has faced bomb scares amid general elections on Sunday.

Media reports said the threats were most likely linked to hacker groups involved with politicians.

According to cybercrime experts, hacker groups are likely from Russia.

The Sofia Prosecution Office has launched an investigation.

To date, 102 alerts for bomb hoaxes have been received at schools in the regions of Pleven, Sliven, Varna, Burgas and Sofia with emails of near-identical content, according to the Interior Ministry.

Western Balkans such as Serbia, North Macedonia and Montenegro have suffered days of false bomb threats.
