Coronavirus: K-pop star Jaejoong admits COVID-19 hospital diagnosis post was April Fool’s joke

K-pop star Jaejoong has come under fire after announcing he was being treated in hospital for coronavirus as an April Fool’s joke.

In an Instagram post, the singer said he had caught COVID-19 after “ignoring” government warnings and “living carelessly”.

A few hours later, the 34-year-old South Korean admitted his prank, saying he wanted to raise awareness about the disease. The post has since been deleted.

However, fans were not too happy, posting angry comments chastising the star, whose real name is Kim Jae-joong, for joking about such a serious issue.

This is not the first time Jaejoong has surprised fans with an April Fool’s joke, previously announcing false marriage plans and pretending to faint during a gig.

For the majority of people infected with the coronavirus, it causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and a cough.

However, it can cause severe illness, and has led to thousands of deaths around the world.

Celebrities and well-known figures who have caught the disease include Hollywood stars Idris Elba and Tom Hanks, Prince Charles, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Arsenal’s head coach Mikel Arteta.
